With the primary goal of lowering energy costs that are among the highest in the agencies’ portfolios, alternative fuels, window replacements, envelope improvements are of primary concern while maintaining the historic nature of the buildings, all but one of which is individually listed on or is a contributing building to the historic register.

New Information Center on Interstate 89. Construction included the main information center building and a greenhouse for a “Living Machine” wastewater processing system. The buildings are heated and cooled with a ground linked “geothermal” heat pump system. Site development included the Vermont Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial, parking lots, on and off ramps and a picnic area.

New Courthouse and Offices of Department of Corrections. The building included five courtrooms and associated offices and service spaces as well as seven short term holding cells. Building innovations included a steel pile foundation, an exterior rain screen and insulation system with concrete block infilled steel structural frame.

Seven new duplex houses on a newly developed site and the historic preservation and gut rehabilitation of three historic quadplexes. The ten buildings all achieved Energy Star Certification and five star plus energy ratings. The buildings were designed and built to achieve low operational and maintenance costs.
